Boots is the UK’s leading pharmacy and health & beauty retailer with over 2,200 stores and 100 beauty halls nationwide.
the challenge
In October 2019, Boots were looking to appoint a new digital partner to take over their digital estate and implement the infrastructure required to help them achieve digital modernisation of their stores and beauty halls. The key aim was to attract new brands by offering contemporary digital canvasses on which those brands could creatively promote their products.
Our Approach
As part of a competitive tendering process, we demonstrated that we had the skills, expertise and experience needed to take over the support and management of their existing digital estate, consisting of more than 900 media players in over 30 stores.
After thorough audits of the existing infrastructure, playlists and labelling conventions, our team were able to migrate the operation into our standard retail support model, enabling Boots to build and deliver their first ‘Beauty Reinvention’ initiative in just 3 months. We also implemented remote management meaning we could support Boots from the outset via our remote managed service, providing content scheduling and 24/7 support.
Fenty were the first brand to join the Boots portfolio post our appointment and took up residence in 10 of their stores offering strategically placed 21” gondola end screens. All the digital assets have the capabilities for ‘take over’ thanks to the installation of advanced Scala content management solutions, ensuring Boots have full control over content at all times.

In January 2020, Boots looked to expand their digital assets further, by implementing dual screen solutions for their No.7 beauty range, Pixel worked as part of the project team to enable and efficiently roll out screens across 560 of their stores in just over 3 months.
Thanks to the successful rollout the initial ‘Beauty Reinvention’ initiative, and a considerable uplift in engagement and footfall from customers, we continue to work collaboratively with Boots who are now in Phase 5 of the ‘Beauty Reinvention’ roll out across their UK and Ireland stores.
In addition to the newly designed beauty halls, we also support Boots in their ambitions to progress with their digital offering, including their future ‘Reinvention of Health Care’ and ‘Reinvention of Opticians’ sectors, onboarding of new brands to stores which have already undergone digital transformations to ensure a seamless integration, and working on their airport locations including Manchester, Belfast, Dublin and Edinburgh where we have installed, manage and support some rather impressive Large Format LED store fronts.
The Outcome
Pixel support more than 2,500 players and displays on behalf of Boots, displaying across 3500+ screens. We continue to collaborate and evolve their modernisation aims through digital transformation in various areas of the business and remain their trusted digital partner for new roll outs, managed services, and support across their estate, with plenty of exciting projects coming soon that we can’t wait to get stuck into.
